Bees in Poppy

When April comes, I need to see poppies. So I headed for Wilson Valley Road. Nothing like the spectacular Super Bloom a couple of years ago, but there’s always something magical to be discovered in nature. I found a few poppies, and discovered this pair of bees when I downloaded the day’s photos. There’s hope for the future.

After the Fire

In 2018 my mountain community of Idyllwild, California, experienced a devastating wildfire. In the burn zone, nothing remained. But two years later, life is returning. This 2-minute slideshow features some of the wildflowers that were blooming in June, 2020. Some of these beautiful flowers, the fire followers, bloom only for a few short years after wildfires.

In June, 2020, I visited the burn zone on May Valley Road with friends and fellow photographers Jamie Guthrie and Bruce Edward Watts. Jamie and I were fortunate to be in Bruce’s company. He is literally writing the books on mountain butterflies and wildflowers. What a magical day!

Wildflower Super Bloom – Anza, California

Some people hate detours.

After a deluge of rain in mid-February, March brought a “wildflower super bloom” to parts of Southern California. Two of the three roads off our mountain were washed out, and a detour took us along a rural road as we made our way around the mountain to the town down below.

What have brought destruction to our roads and bridges had blessed the hillside with exactly wheat the wildflowers needed to bloom. And the miracle of the “super bloom” occurred during an amazing butterfly migration.

This magnificient bloom occurred in a protected habitat conservation area.
